Dear Therapist: Learn To Drive

An old supervisor of mine used to say, “Never learn to drive a car from someone who hasn’t first taken a driving course themselves…”

And without a sense of shame or guilt implied there, having a therapist as a therapist can be more than helpful to work through your own stuff. You may have a more intimate knowledge of what the other side of the “couch” could look like. So for those that have one - and those that don’t - if you can at least imagine the feeling of what a client feels like, you’ll always gain more insight and confidence into your own work.
