Dear Therapist: Writing Post Session
In as few words as possible in your notebook, write the feeling you left the room with.
It'll help inform your next session with the psychodynamics of what is going on between the two of you. And simply start to process any of the difficult times.
For instance, I had a particularly challenging morning yesterday because I had a guy who looked quite intensely at me in his pauses and silences. I got uneasy personally, and instead of letting such countertransference rule me, I wrote down, "pressured," in big letters at the end of my page because of the weight he attempted to place on me to "solve" his problems. And next session I'll bring up at some early point that "I'm noticing there is pressure sometimes when in session... Can you tell me about that?" And focus my session on this. It's practicing trusting your instincts and honoring your own feelings as content for your relationships.
